Estrogen is a hormone, that is present in women and men (a little less there in proportion). Both too much and too little estrogen can make you sick. It is not only the absolute estrogen level that counts, but in particular the ratio of progesterone (corpus luteum hormone) to estrogen. It is best to always have about 100x more progesterone than estrogen. This is because progesterone cancels out many of the otherwise harmful effects of estrogen. Basically, estrogen is a stress hormone, progesterone is a rest hormone.
